Alberta’s provincial government recently released a report analyzing the proposed Alberta Pension Plan (APP), including costs, benefits and risk considerations.

It was compiled by consultant LifeWorks Inc. and suggests Alberta would be entitled to 53% of Canada Pension Plan assets if it were to leave the national retirement savings program and establish its own.

Assuming a start date of January 2027, the APP report projects employees and employers would each have approximate full year savings of up to $1,425 per employee, with an estimated $5 billion in total first-year savings.

The province is planning to introduce legislation this fall that could eventually lead to the APP’s creation if it passes a referendum.
