Alberta has passed Bill 2, the Alberta Pension Protection Act. Bill 2 enables the Alberta government to conduct a referendum for establishing an Alberta pension plan, taking on Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) obligations and liabilities.

Bill 2 also outlines the criteria Alberta must meet if it chooses to establish an Alberta pension plan, including:

  • Utilizing transferred CPP assets exclusively for the Alberta pension plan.
  • Ensuring the Alberta pension plan offers benefits that are equal to or better than the CPP.
  • Maintaining contribution rates that are either the same as or lower than CPP contributions.
