Approximately 10,000 veterans are suing Veteran Affairs Canada (VAC), claiming the organization failed to provide them with benefits to which they were entitled.
The class action, which was certified in October, argues the veterans were eligible for a Supplementary Retirement Benefit but, due to systemic negligence and breach of fiduciary duty, either didn’t receive the benefit, or received it in lower amounts than they should have.
Mr. Bruyea, who was the plaintiff seeking certification of a class proceeding on behalf of himself and other veterans, claims that VAC failed to properly inform the veterans about various financial benefits — likely due to the fact that VAC employees didn’t fully understand the interlocking benefit schemes.
