New data shows a significant gender gap in Canadians’ retirement income: on average, women earn 83 cents for every dollar that men receive in retirement.
According to a report published by Ontario's Pay Equity Office (PEO), Understanding the Gender Pension Gap in Canada, this gap has widened from 15% in 1976 to 17% in 2024.
The gender pension gap reflects differences in combined income from Canada’s three-pillar retirement system: Old Age Security/Guaranteed Income Supplement, Canada Pension Plan/Quebec Pension Plan, and private pensions (including RRSP/RRIF income).
