OMERS wellbeing report: social and health

A majority of retirees (71%) and active workers (58%) say proper retirement planning should go beyond finances to include consideration of physical and mental health and social connections, according to a new survey by the Ontario Municipal Employees’ Retirement System (“OMERS”).

The OMERS Retire Ready Impact Report, which polled 1,500 Ontarians — split evenly between retired and non-retired individuals — found retired women were particularly affected by non-financial considerations, with 56% wishing they had done more for their physical health, compared with 48% of retired men.

Other notable findings from the survey included:

  • More than 80% of retirees reported happiness with their retirement, but only 60% feel they have achieved their "ideal" retirement, based on timing, good health, and financial security.
  • Roughly 20% of non-retirees feel that they will achieve their ideal retirement.
  • 44% of non-retired men have started planning for retirement compared with 34% of women.
  • Close to 40% of retirees claimed to have a comprehensive retirement plan that considers physical health, mental health, social connectivity and financial security. This group also reported higher overall satisfaction and health.
