Changes to Alberta's Employment Pension Plans Regulation came into effect on June 20, 2024

Alberta has amended AR 154/2014, the Employment Pension Plans Regulation (the “EPPR”). The changes were effected by Order-in-Council 181/2024, through the Employment Pension Plans Amendment Regulation on June 20, 2024.

  • The key amendment to the EPPR involves changes to the calculation for the Provision for Adverse Deviation (PfAD)applicable to target benefit plans. The PfAD for target benefit components is now equal to the sum of 7.5% and a supplementary percentage (equal to or greater than zero). The total must be sufficient to achieve the funding objectives set out in the plan’s funding policy and manage material risks.
