The Canada Revenue Agency's Registered Plans Directorate (“RPD”) has announced a new approach to reviewing plan documents submitted for registration and amendment approval.
Where revisions are required, the RPD will contact the submitter and request the necessary changes. If the RPD does not receive the requested information after multiple attempts to connect, and there is no engagement from the submitter, the submission may be closed or rejected.
The RPD also reminded administrators of registered pension plans and deferred profit-sharing plans that the date a complete application for registration is received may affect the registration date permitted under the Income Tax Act. As a result, incomplete or delayed submissions may result in a later effective registration date than anticipated.
