The federal government has passed Bill C-64, the Pharmacare Act.

The Bill Received Royal Assent on Oct. 10, and the Ministry of Health said it is now focused on reaching bilateral agreements with provinces and territories to implement the first phase of its national pharmacare program, covering access to contraception and diabetes medications.

Under the Act, Canada’s Drug Agency must also develop a list of essential drugs and related products to form the basis of a national formulary, a national strategy dealing with the bulk purchasing of drugs and the appropriate use of prescription medications. The creation of Canada’s Drug Agency was announced in December 2023 with an investment of over $89.5 million over 5 years.
