Ontario seeks input on variable life benefits that provide retirees with lifetime payments tied to fund performance, life expectancy.

The Ontario government is seeking input on a consultation paper on Variable Life Benefits (VLBs), which provide retirees with monthly payments for life with amounts that can change based on the fund’s investment returns and the life expectancy of its members.
The paper explores a potential legislative and regulatory framework for VLBs in Ontario for certain types of pension plans, including defined contribution pension plans, pooled registered pension plans, and plans permitting additional voluntary contributions.
Stakeholder comments on the consultation paper are due January 10, 2025.
