The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (“FSRA”) has released recent data showing continued growth in workplace pension plan membership across the province.

FSRA data shows that workplace pension plan membership in Ontario increased by approximately 200,000 members in 2025. Further data indicates that more than 175,000 individuals joined defined benefit pension plans in 2025, representing a 6% increase from 2024, while more than 58,000 individuals joined defined contribution plans – an increase of 9% over the same period.

FSRA also noted that a survey of 1,000 Ontarians from December 2024 shows that many individuals, including pension plan members, had not completed key retirement planning steps, including developing a retirement plan, calculating retirement income needs, and reviewing annual pension statements.  FSRA has urged members to review annual pension statements, use online tools to better understand their financial needs when they stop working, speak with their financial planner or financial advisor, and start or review their retirement plan.
