Saskatchewan introduces Bill 5 to amend employment laws, addressing tips, terminations and expanded leave options

Saskatchewan’s provincial government introduced Bill 5, The Saskatchewan Employment Amendment Act, 2024 for first reading on December 4, 2024.

If passed, Bill 5 would make changes in the following changes to leaves of absence:

  • Extending serious illness and injury leave from twelve weeks to twenty-seven weeks;
  • Exempting employees from certain leave eligibility requirements if their absence is due to a public health emergency;
  • Increasing eligibility for leaves of absence due to pregnancy loss from thirteen to twenty weeks prior to the estimated due date; and
  • Extending the period in which a bereavement leave can be accessed to within six months of a death, and extending bereavement leave to include pregnancy loss.
